Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.
Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.
Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

I knew that before I read this book, I would love it. I anticipated reading it to the point I kept stalling because it just seemed to perfect for my taste. I sometimes also doubted my gut feel. But now, I’m done reading it and it is confirmed that I really love the whole story. I love the characters, worlds, drama and the adventure in the story. Somehow, I love that Kell has a soft side while Lila can kick butt. I also can now say, the Kell is my current book crush. I like that he has different facets but all in all he still knows whats good and bad. Also, I just like how he handles Rhy and Lila’s teasing.
Why I like this story..
- It is a good introduction to the series
- The story building was good. Its characters have evolved when the story ended
- The teasing parts between characters were well timed.
- The action scenes were made well
- The cover of the book is aesthetically appealing
- Kell’s jacket and Lila’s outfit to the ball
What i did not like in the story..
- I was expecting more of a struggle in the last action scenes
I gave this book a 5 hearts rating and more because I love this book. It is a good introduction to the Shades of Magic series. I’m anticipating a more elaborate world building in the second book. However, anything could happen in this world of magic. I liked the characters even the Dane twins. They were evil but definitely paranoid. Kell and Lila’s relationship, would it be just friends? I would not mind a romance element to the story. However,I hope it would focus more on the magic and adventure the characters would be having. So to sum it up, I love the story its characters, world and Kell’s jacket.
BUY, BORROW, NEVER MIND: Buy, because its a wonderful fantasy with lots of possibilites.
